I came upon these photos of Indian brothels on Ultrabrown and they have just etched themselves onto my brain. I don't really have much to say--the pictures speak for themselves-- but, is it just me, or do you immediately wonder whether these women are mothers? I don't think my mind would have gone there pre-kids. See all of the haunting photos here.

Ohmygod these are heart-breaking. And the one with the baby? Ohmygod. It's something abuot the eyes of these women. Or girls. They are empty.
Yes, I immediately wonder if these women have kids. And, in the last photo, I wonder where that beautiful child's parents are. That is the sad reality of it I suppose--they are probably not around to protect her.
I also wonder. And it cuts both ways because you wonder how a mom can live like this but then you also learn that many of these women do these jobs because they have no other way to support their kids. Can you imagine? Because who wouldn't do anything necessary to get the milk and food our kids need? But can you imagine having to do what they do?
Wow, these are horrifying and at the same time beautiful photographs. Are they the same filmmaker who did Born Into Brothels?
I want to fly to India and rescue that little baby and that little girl, this breaks my heart.
So poignant. My mind races to my daughter and the how I can't even imagine a life for her like what these women lead.
That little baby on that bed in the first picture makes my stomach fall. This is so sad. I watched this documentary a while ago about how prostitution can actually be empowering for women. Didn't buy it then, impossible to buy it looking at these photos.

there are incredible organizations in India that are trying to empower women to seek STD testing and treatment, use condoms and find ways to get their own children out of this vicious cycle of poverty and sexual slavery. there is nothing empowering about prostitution. we should stop being shocked and start working to help these women.

honestly? There is so much poverty and destitution in Bombay that you have to wonder how much worse these women are than many many others...

This truly sucks. Although we read about this on and off, the pictures hit you way harder than words ever can.

I can't take this...it's just so brutally sad...
Out of respect for these women, is there any chance their faces can be blurred. Yes, it is important to understand these women's plights, but seeing the naked girl feels like a revictimization of her. I am sure that she would not want photos of her taken and plastered over the internet.

These pictures have been probably taken from the book Farkland Road, published in 1981.And they have been shot in 1979 by a photographer Mary Allen, who tried to publish them in America so as to gather some help for them but couldn't succeed because these pictures proved to be more explicit for contemporary American market.
