Monday Musings: Who you gonna call?

Monday, August 10, 2009

Jennifer Aniston just won a parenting award. And a recent poll concluded that most people would rather have the child-less actress babysit their children than call up Anjelina Jolie, mother of 6, for the job.

It got me thinking. Oprah is a God-figure to the world on topics like marriage and parenting--but she isn't married and doesn't have any kids. In the same babysitting poll (who conducts these sorts of things, anyway?!) , Ellen DeGeneres and her partner Portia de Rossi, who have no children, topped the poll of more than 10,000 moms that asked which star they would feel most comfortable leaving their kids with.

It's odd, no? Kind of like when you are going to get a haircut--and the hairdresser has horrible hair. Or a facial and the aesthetician has bad skin. Or a pedicure and...heh.

Who do you go to for parenting advice? Do you take parenting advice from people without kids?

DEFINITELY only people with kids, how could anybody else really get it? I think it's so funny with my friends without kids try to give me advice. I just nod!

Only people I truly trust and who have my family's best interests at heart: My mom, my sister (who does not have kids), my sister in law (who does). Like the Oprah phenomenon, it's about TRUST, not necesearily life experience.

Hmm, nobody really. I guess that's sort of sad?!?

Never really thought about the Oprha aspect, so true and a little odd. But I guess she has access to all the best "experts" in the world so she is reeally just providing a forum for people to speak, not really giving advice herself?

something about having a kid gives perfect strangers the "right" to give advice! but i DO love oprah.

This is an interesting q because I don't feel like I go to ANYONE for advice. I consult books and sites for questions but for real support I really just rely on my husband. which is not to say that we don't have friends we adore but for some reason parenting seems so personal and i don't want to be judged by them.

My mom but even that is a little like the examples you cite because she had us so long ago, her "advice" is often outdated or just plain wrong (give them honey). It's okay though she also has great advice.
