Deepa is a wife, mother, writer and she sometimes masquerades as a lawyer as well. She revels in friendship, humor, champagne, and laughing at herself--often. She never ever reads US Magazine, thinks Rushdie is a genius, wishes she could write one sentence as funny as "Arrested Development," and lives in the Bay Area with her motley crew. She can be reached at deviswithbabies@gmail.com
the answer to the question is YES, everyone is. this is funny and sad.
awesome! and very true. love the brown girls!!
FANTASTIC
Best one yet! Love seeing South Asians in this medium, please keep this coming!
Good work Devis! Been reading the blog since the beginning but have not commented. I love this comic and want to know if there are back issues online? This is so telling and I know people who feel this way. Like the humor plus the reality of it.

Good stuff. Really innovative animation style I assume they are real photographs? Very cool effect--like comics walking amongst us.
Love this comic. And I want that dress! GO OBAMA!
Hey Deepa!
"!!!" means find me a girl friend so I can forward her these funny ass comics.
Much love,
D
Pitch-perfect! Way to expose the hipocrisy.
Just for the record: bringing a black man home to meet your conservative Indian parents is much better than bringing a 72 year old white man who does this weird thing with his tongue.
Very nice! I especially like all the details (the dress, the tote bag, etc.) Where can we see more?
This is great. We have read about the Bradley effect everywhere, but it's insightful to see how it plays out on an individual basis--especially for Desis for whom there is an underbelly of distrust towards African Americans. (Even that is rarely discussed). Nice job.
hard enough for a guy to bring a gujju girl home....sorry ladies, part of being a devi is to marry them damn Indians ;->
great social commentary.
Wow! You Indian girls are so exotic!
(PS OK for Indian guys to take African-American women home?)
wonderful!
Jarod sounds hot.
This is wonderful! So true and witty at the same time.
this is hilarious!!! i can't believe nobody has pointed this out yet!!
I am not a Devi nor do I have a baby. A friend directed me to this site to see this comic and I'm impressed. Have you considered a separate venture for the comic? If not, you should.
Well, let's not forget the flipside to this, given that a desi woman dates outside of race, if black men are avoided, which one is obviously preferred. It's the flip side to disadvantage.
This is wonderful, as is the conversation about it at Sepia. You guys have a tough act to follow but we can't wait to see it.
So true and anybody who says otherwise is lying to themselves or about themselves. The arguments on Sepia notwithstanding, the culture of insiduous racisim vis a vis African Amercians (on the part of we Desis) is as palpable now as it has ever been. Whether Obama changes that in the dating sphere is going to be proxy for whether he changes that in the larger sphere. My fear is that nothing will change.
Have you seen the dialogue this has provoked on Sepia?

ouch. I know Indians of my parents generation still feel this way. But seriously? Are there still younger brown desi divas who think this? Of course, my brother and I both married outside the culture so maybe I'm just not clued in.
Great comic! Saw a mention for you guys on Masala Chai. Then looked into all the debate this prompted. Pretty illuminating (and at times just silly) stuff...especially because on the one hand the comic is just plain good funny! Looking forward to more.
"hard enough for a guy to bring a gujju girl home....sorry ladies, part of being a devi is to marry them damn Indians ;->"
And can you tell me why I have to marry an Indian in order to be a "devi", Ankush???
Great knowledge you have given to me
thank you
Very true; everyone is a little bit racist!
This is an excellent article. I appreciate the blog for this very informative information........ please write more like this.
