"Sanjay, Sanjay, Why Have You Failed Us?"

"Dr." Aasif Mandvi ("on behalf of every single member of my community") on Sanjay Gupta--hilarious. My favorite line: "I'm an Indian-Americans, John, we are all born with a certain level of graduate school medical training." Heh. Don't our parents wish...!

To the poster above: While it would be amazing for Dr. Gupta to bring these sorts of issues to the national spotlight, is that the role of Surgeon General? I'm not being mean, I'm actually legitimately curious.

The phenom by the way--of Indians in America going to drastic efforts to have male children--doesn't surprise me in the least. When I was pregnant with my first, my in-laws constantly told me that I was "lucky" so that the baby would certainly be a boy. They were not joking. I truly and deeply hope this cultural backwardness disappears with our generation.

I don't know if it's the role of an SG to address these sort of issues, but if it's not, it should be.

Hilarious thanks for posting I must have missed this on the Daily Show. As for whether Sanjay is going to address the issue of sex-selection by South Asians or South Asian issues in general, I highly doubt it. First of all, the Surgeon General doesn't really do that much and I'm not sure the philosophical and ethical permutations of gender selection is in the same camp as the food pyramid and warnings on cigarettes. Also (and I assume many people have already said this, I haven't read much about this yet) from what I remember Sanjay Gupta isn't really your quintessential Desi. He's pretty "white" no?

Let's hope so! That way there's a chance he might address the issue instead of denying it.

(wink. wink.)
